The trio will compete in the ages 12 to 18 women’s group along with Ilè Viljoen, Maya Tager and Summer Thwaits. Bailey Courtney, Rachel Walker and Anche Davidson will compete in the ages 13 to 19 women’s group.

Benoni gymnasts Amber Folkus, Kaelin Campbell, and Isabella Rathbone have earned the prestigious opportunity to represent South Africa at the upcoming International Gymnastics Federation (FIG) Acrobatics Gymnastics World Age Group Competition in Portugal. Selected to compete in the women’s 12 to 18 age group, the trio, under the guidance of coaches Isabella Carr and Armand Koekemoer, will showcase their skills on the global stage this September.

Their journey to Portugal follows a series of rigorous trials and competitions, including standout performances at the world championships trials and the Gym Games. Training tirelessly for three to four hours daily since January, these dedicated athletes have demonstrated exceptional commitment and perseverance.

“I’m thrilled to represent SA in Portugal. It’s a dream come true,” remarked 12-year-old Amber Folkus, reflecting on her journey in gymnastics since starting at age nine. Her sentiments were echoed by her teammates, who share a passion for the sport and a determination to excel internationally.

“We qualified after intense preparation and challenging trials,” explained Kaelin Campbell, a 16-year-old student at Ashton International College. “It’s an honor to compete at this level and a privilege to represent our country. We are determined to make our families and nation proud.”

Isabella Rathbone, also 16, highlighted the significance of their achievement despite facing setbacks like injury. “Years of hard work have led to this moment. We’ve trained diligently to reach our goal of competing at the worlds,” she stated.

The competition, however, presents a financial challenge as it is self-funded. The gymnasts are seeking support from the community to assist with travel expenses. The trio’s selection underscores their talent, determination, and the support of their coaches and families. Their participation not only reflects their personal achievements but also celebrates South Africa’s presence on the global gymnastics stage.
