In a swift operation, the Benoni Flying Squad (BFS) successfully apprehended three suspects linked to a recent house robbery in eMalahleni. The arrests took place in Phumula, Alberton, following a collaborative effort involving multiple law enforcement agencies.
Warrant Officer Grant Giblin, spokesperson for the BFS, recounted the operation which unfolded on June 14. During routine patrols near the Mall@Carnival on the R554, officers were alerted to a maroon Mazda 2 believed to have been stolen during a house robbery earlier that day. A joint team, including a private security company, eMalahleni neighborhood watch, and SAPS personnel, tracked the vehicle to Lyvuya Street.
“The suspects attempted to flee on foot upon abandoning the Mazda 2,” stated Giblin. “With the assistance of the community, officers swiftly apprehended all three individuals. Incriminating items such as shoes, a pillow, and a blanket linked to the robbery were recovered from the vehicle.”
Investigations revealed that the suspects, alleged to have been dropped off near the crime scene by a white Toyota Quantum, had stolen five laptops, two large safes containing an undisclosed amount of money, and other valuables. Although the safes were recovered, the money and laptops were reportedly destined for Mozambique.
Further developments in the case emerged when investigating officer Captain Tshidi Mamarega received intelligence on June 15 leading to the arrest of a third suspect. This suspect was found in possession of stolen vehicles and a substantial amount of heroin, leading to additional charges including drug possession and accessory to robbery.
“The successful operation highlights the effective collaboration between law enforcement agencies and the proactive involvement of the community,” concluded Giblin. “Investigations into the incident are ongoing as we continue to gather more evidence related to this case.”
The BFS remains committed to ensuring the safety and security of communities by swiftly responding to criminal activities and apprehending those responsible.
